Congratulations to our winners!
Wellington Round the Bays held a competition for the public to design the official merchandise for the 2021 event.
The winner received bragging rights for their design being chosen, a $500 Queensgate Shopping Centre voucher, and a Lenovo tabM7 Tablet. Second place received a family return trip with Bluebridge Ferries and third place a $50 Southern Cross Bar voucher.

First Place - Sarah Illingworth
Part of the Action
This playful design for Brendan Foot Supersite is a celebration of the beloved event and those who participate. The design visualises the diverse characters of Wellington and how they choose to manoeuvre from start to finish. People are at the core of Round the Bays, and so whether walking, running, or manning the sausage sizzle stand, they are integral to the camaraderie and are recognised in this design.
The stylised character illustrations and the bright, refined colour palate offer a modern, clean look. Each persona looks to reflect the diversity and overall atmosphere of the summer event.
The dynamic front and back design caters for those on the sidelines as well as those participating with a number tagged to their shirt as the designs work well alone or seen together.
The typographic ‘2021’ on the front brings people into the present to feel part of something current and special (like this year is THE year!) and will go on to establish the t-shirt as merchandise from a moment in time.

Second Place - Laura Young
Round the Bays is not only a day to challenge your fitness. It’s a day to celebrate and rejoice under the Wellington sun and as they say “can’t beat Welly on a good day!”
My design focuses on the diversity of the participants, spectators and performers, who truly distinguish Round the Bays from other events. From bunches of bananas, to super parents pushing their prams. To side-line performers and cheerleading support crew.
My design encapsulates the spirit and the vibes of celebrations and fun, a wonderful day of the year for Wellingtonians. The yellow, black and white coloured theme is to maintain the existing Wellington branding. The smaller logo on the front allows space for the participant’s tag without concealing the branding.
Third Place - Victoria Stevens
The design was based on what makes Wellington, Wellington. It’s based on the traditional colours of our sporting teams, the Hurricanes, and Phoenix. I have also included the shape of the beehive on the front and incorporated different elements from the region within it.
The somewhat eclectic markings are to pay homage to the fact that Wellington is made up of so many cultures, but it all comes together in one amazing looking collective!
